AI workshop and research at the highest level at CIB in Munich

Last week we hosted an inspiring RIDMI Workshop in Munich. CIB, the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) once again presented their joint research work at the highest level. CIB presented exciting research results in the field of layout recognition and AI training on CIB crowdsource. The Fraunhofer Institute presented impressive research progress in image replacement text and AI. We are pleased that the DLR is also supporting us with advice and assistance in the successful implementation of the project. With this constellation, its innovative strength is assured to drive technological progress towards an inclusive future.

RIDMI - Accessibility through AI

The RIDMI project for accessible reading of PDF documents and scans is dedicated to the challenge of making digital documents accessible with the help of artificial intelligence. People with visual or reading disabilities often encounter barriers when using traditional PDF files. RIDMI is developing technologies that can intelligently recognize the layout and text in documents and convert them into a readable, accessible structure.

Focus on “Accessibility”

Accessibility has been and will continue to be a high priority at CIB. What originally began as support for the visually impaired has now evolved into the concept of "Design for All". This is not just about accessibility for people with permanent disabilities, but about making modern content and processes accessible to everyone. Whether the limitations are temporary, age-related or permanent, CIB is committed to providing equal access for all.

CIB business customers can already generate accessible PDF/UA automatically and are individually supported by the PDF/UA assistant in CIB pdf brewer a la hora de generar PDF/UA accesibles a partir de documentos de Word.

In addition to the accessibility results, CIB also presented spin-off products from RIDMI that were made possible by the research. These include advanced logo recognition and easily customizable document classification based on layouts.

The results of our research speak for themselves: joint projects have produced numerous technologies that are already successfully integrated into our products and used in customer projects. These spin-off solutions optimize modern IT systems for people's diverse needs. It is clear that those who focus on accessibility are best positioned to meet the challenges of demographic change.

Conclusion

The RIDMI workshop was the perfect opportunity to discuss our successful research collaboration with Fraunhofer and lay the groundwork for future projects. We recognize that technological accessibility and demographic change are closely linked. Our common goal is to develop solutions that have a lasting impact on society and are accessible to everyone.

This means that "Design for All" is not just an aspiration, but is actively practiced at CIB - supported by the fruitful collaboration with Fraunhofer, which continues to promise exciting developments for an inclusive digital future.

Dinner & team building

Finally, we would like to express our sincere thanks to our partners. The joint dinner provided an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthened cooperation within the project team. We look forward to the next steps together and the future opportunities arising from this project.
